After diesel prices dropped below $4 per gallon in the United States in early April, they didn’t begin to approach that $4 mark until early September when prices peaked at $3.981. From there, prices began to drop again and reached their recent low of $3.822 on November 18. Prices jumped fairly significantly to start December and have settled in the most recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration at $3.871.
Since November ended with prices averaging $3.844 across the United States, every region has seen an increase in diesel prices, but some more than others. For example, New England has seen prices by more than six cents. At the end of November, diesel cost an average of $4.003 in New England and now averages 4.064.
By contrast, three regions have seen prices rise, but by less than two cents. The Gulf Coast, Rocky Mountain and West Coast without California all have risen only slightly. Of those, the lowest prices in the country remain in the Gulf Coast at $3.766, up just 1.3 cents since the end of November.
California has featured the highest prices in the country for quite some time, but the big rise in New England has made the gap much closer between California and the second highest diesel prices in the United States. At one point in November, both New England and California actually had the same price, but after the most recent reports were released, California at $4.066 was the highest in the country all alone. At the end of November, diesel cost $4.023 in California and $4.003. New England’s average price is now $4.064.
Prices through 2013 have averaged $3.923 and are expected to average $3.92 for the year, which means they should remain around the same levels they’ve been for the last few weeks through the final two weeks of the year. The 2014 outlook indicates a pretty significant drop in prices to an expected level of $3.77.
