Behind Every Skyline are Millions of Drivers
Skylines are often one of the most recognizable points of pride for major U.S. cities – their silhouettes often emblazed upon tourist sweatshirts, posters, and coffee mugs as proof of having had the New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle…experience. When people admire the city skyline, they usually take in the finished product. But these skylines have years of history behind them and years of future ahead. They are constantly, though often subtly when viewed as part of the macro, evolving. And there is a huge logistical support system contributing to that economic expansion.
The United States had about 930 skyscrapers (buildings over 150 meters tall) at the end of 2025, according to the Skyscraper Atlas. According to the Skyscraper Center’s Council on Vertical Urbanism, anywhere from 7 to 13 skyscraper projects are completed each year across the U.S.
These construction projects are highly complex. In large industrial cities, there is rarely room to store materials, which means that everything must arrive as it is needed. Trucks deliver raw materials in bulk to staging yards, typically outside the city center where they are sorted and sent into the city in smaller strategic waves for just-in-time delivery. Materials like steel beams and mixed concrete arrive precisely as they are scheduled to go up, which prevents trucks from idling in the city streets.
A partially completed skyscraper is, literally, a construction project. Every visible part of a building represents dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of transportation movements. Rebar, piping, electrical components and mechanical equipment arrive from specialized manufacturers. Even the cranes used to build the structure must first be transported to the site as their own oversized or heavy haul load, requiring their own permits and coordination.
Concrete presents its own unique challenge. Unlike many construction materials, ready-mix concrete can’t simply sit in storage waiting to be used. It must be transported and poured within strict timeframes. This creates a highly-coordinated relationship between construction crews and logistics. On large projects, concrete trucks may arrive continuously throughout the day to maintain progress. The success of an entire construction schedule often depends on trucks arriving exactly when they’re needed.
Building More Than Structures
Skyscrapers are one of our country’s most iconic symbols of growth. They represent investment, innovation, business activity, and economic development. But, every new building also represents thousands of transportation movements supporting local economies. The trucking industry itself plays a major role in that economic activity. The American Trucking Association reports that approximately 3.58 million professional truck drivers were employed in the United States in 2024, while trucking related activity supported approximately 8.4 million jobs nationwide.
